Hammanah bint Jahsh or Hamnah (Arabic: حمنة بنت جحش) was the sister of Abd-Allah ibn Jahsh, Ubayd-Allah ibn Jahsh and Zaynab bint Jahsh, one of Muhammad's wives. She was niece of Hamza ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib. She was married to the Mus`ab ibn `Umair who was killed in the battle of Uhud. Later she got married to prominent Muslim general Talha ibn Ubayd-Allah.[1]
She was married to Mus`ab ibn `Umair, when she entered in to the fold of Islam. She migrated to Medina, and when the women of Ansar and Muhajirun took the oath of allegiance at the hands of Muhammad, she was amongst them.
She participated in the battle of Uhud and provided water to the needy, and treated the wounded and injured.
Hammanah's husband Mus`ab ibn `Umair was also martyred in this incident. It has been narrated that when Muhammad returned from the battle of Uhud the women began to ask of the fates of their men folk. When Hammanah approached Muhammad he said "O Hamnah! Seek reward upon your brother Abdullah." She replied, "To Allah we belong and to him we shall return. May Allah's mercy be upon him and may Allah forgive him" Then Muhammad said, "Seek reward upon your uncle, Hamza ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib." Again she remained calm and gave the same reply. He then said, "O Hammanah! Seek reward upon your husband, Mus`ab ibn `Umair." Upon this she broke down and started crying. Muhammad remarked "The woman’s bond with a man is greater than that of a man's with a woman."
Hammanah then entered into matrimony with Talha ibn Ubayd-Allah who was amongst the Asharah Mubasharah. (The ten people who were promised paradise in the world)
The year of Hammanah's death is unknown, however, it is known that she was alive until her sister Zaynab's death. Zaynab died in the year 20 A. H. Hammanah had two children from Talha, Muhammad ibn Talha and Imran. Muhammad was known by the appellation of Sajjad.
